I have been out and about getting the roadie sorted in the escort and have noticed that when I rev the engine out to 4K it just falls back to 0 again even though I'm still accelerating.

Below 4k there are no issues whatsoever.

Was curious as to any thoughts as to why this would happen?

Also if I was was to replace the tach with an after market one what size would fit in place of the original one?  100mm?

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt, if your after a factory tacho to fit(just fit) look at Celica 1978ish, a Cortina TE/TF 2ltr or like what i done is use a Mini Cooper Tacho, it takes 2x screws to fit and a pulse wire....best part is it reads up to 8k  .
Your Escort tacho might have a diode failure, take it to an auto instrument shop or buy another from a wrecked mk2

Cheers Mate,

I think I'll hunt around for an RS2000 dash and chuck that in.  I think they look really great.

Good idea on the other tachos I like the idea of 8K!

How's the anglebox?

Cheers,

Matt

RS dash are over priced, especially for the extra oil gauge ! You might pull 1 from uk for $120 if lucky.. My mk2 has a std Ghia dash with the mini cooper tacho.
The Anglebox is going ok, got the rear arches finally done last week...photos to come in a few days .

I hear you about the price.  I am also thinking of just making one as well.  What size do I need for the tacho?  100mm?

Will keep a look out for the pics.

Cheers

I thought I'd ressurect this thread rather than starting another one.

My tacho has stopped working all together.

Is there a way to jury rig it up to test if it works at all.  I have run a wire from the coil into the wiring pins behind the dash but I still get nothing.

Any ideas on what to do or on how to rewire it?

Cheers

Take the tacho out of the RS dash and mount it in the ghia dash , reinstall in car and test the 4k problem, if it's there still you know it's the dash at fault and if not, the tacho is shot . You can butcher a TE Cortina dash for spares

Ta, I had an auto elec do some work and now I get nothing at all from the dash.

They did a crap job so I'm loath to go back to have them fix it.

Cheers

Is there a way to wire the tacho in just to test if it works?  I am pretty sure my wiring has been f*&ked by the auto elec I went to.

If I just go -ve side of coil to the tacho will that work?

Cheers,

There is 4x wire for tacho in the mk2 neg, +ve, lights, coil +, I think, it's been yonks since I've hacked into the wiring on mine. The owners manual should have a diagram of where wires lead to etc. If your dash isn't working it could be a dud earth to the body. When I installed the Cooper tacho I just used speaker wire direct to coil for testing then wire in properly .
