thats most likely the problem.

the air powered bleeder did nothing.

the gavity drip bleed did nothing.

how exactly do you bleed a master on a bench vice? i dont want to damage it.

Just grip it in the vice. If you dont want to damage the housing you can sandwich some alloy strips in there. When you are happy with it grab a decent screw driver to push the plunger in with. Fill the container up, hold 2 fingers over the outlet's and push the piston to bled out the fluid *careful it will spray, so use a rag to cover it maybe* be sure when push ing and releasing the plunger go slow. And make sure you keep fingers blocking the holes when releasing the plunger , so it dont suck the air in. Probably use half a bottle or when you think you are happy. Then dont remove your fingers from the holes until you screw the pipes in first then bolt it to the booster.
Then do the whole system again just to be sure. I am pretty sure you WILL have success this time.

well i got the pedal alot better, this involved,

bench vice master bleed, 10-15 minute drip (gravity) bleed.

then another 10-15 minute drip bleed just for good measure,

still not happy with it i had a third go at adjusting the rear brakes.

got them tight as f*ck! and now the pedal feels something decent!

still not amazing to be honest, but definately a decent improvement.

but yeah cheers for the replies guys, and if the inspectors still not happy i will have to kick his ass!

Have you replaced the hoses?
I am always cautious after doing brakes, never happy with the pedal till you drive it and get some heat into them.
Did I read you did the pads? wait till they bed in to give you a pedal if thats the case.

na the pads are second hand, i bought the whole kit second hand.

still plenty of meat left so didn't bother.

just drive it for a while as long as it stops. i think the problem is you have driven another car....

after getting out of anything then back in an escort they will feel funny

my pedal feels spongy, but they stop the car well.

Hey did you put the shims on the back of the pads? Hope you know what i mean? Some time if you put the old original shims back on the pads, the shims can be warped which in turn pushes the pistons back in the calipers, so when you put the foot down it will be spongy as you have to push them further. Found that out the hard way.
grant may be right you may be now over thinking the issue.
Also old pads on clean cut surfaces wont feel crash hot either or any non mated surface...Just drive them and bed them in and see how it goes...

righto, well it stops the car acceptably now. so i might just wait and see how it feels after i get back from sfs. (if i do go)
