Hey fella's,

Im looking at buying some new autometer or speco (depending on price) gauges and i was wondering what ones i need. There are Mechanical and Electric ones. I just want a oil, water & volts for my 2LT MKII. What do i need, Mechanical or Electric?

Cheers Rhys

water and volts electric.

dunno about volts, but the water guage takes 2 minutes to wire up.

and the oil i would recomend electrical, if u do it mechanicly, its just another place for you to lose engine oil without realising.

mechanical are better to me, because they work even without the ignition turned on. but electric are easier to hide and instal. mechanical need to run a feed from what your measuring. so if your measuring oil pressure, u need to run a pipe from were you T piece into the oil system to the guage. the same with the water temp.

electric you instal the sender unit, and then run a wire or two.

these look sick, and dont look too bad on price.

I'd go electric as much possible. If your mechanical lines break like my oil one did, you'll loose all your oil, or water and possibly spray the road or your cabin with oil/water. My Oil pipe split and shot oil at 70psi right at my right brake disc and almost spun me 180 the wrong way.[:u]

i was assuming that you wouldn't use the plastic line supplied. its crap. braided lines and earl's fittings all the way.

mechanical can not be mounted inside for safety reasons.

check rta guidelines, probably something on the website about it.

The standard RS dash oil gauge is mechanical - it is mounted inside the car......I would check the RTA guidelines with respect to blocking view etc
this all goes back to drag racing

I think you'll find its only mechanical fuel pressure that's not allowed in the car. Once upon a time, almost all gauges were mechanical.
