Hi all how are we doing? not urgent but would like a bit advice.
Been toiling with trying to get my hands on a 1600gt engine and carbie for my escort, i dont want to go down the road of huge engine mods or the 2l conversions that why i want to keep it simple, doing reserch on it there is very little info on it and never seem to see any for sale any where especially in Perth WA, I know they were originally fitted to cortina and capri's. would there be any in the wrecker? orlying in any sheds?, any help would be great thanks

Theres one sitting forlornly in an early Mk2 Ghia at Dash Paintball in Gidgeganup. Well there was a year ago anyway - its inside the paintball arena along with a Mk2 coupe shell

I'm not 100% on my Kents but it was a high comp version with 32/36 weber anyway.

there pretty hard to get, not impossible but ya not tripping over them, ya better off getting a standard 1600 and putting the webber 32/36 on and mybe abit of work, ive been told a 34/34 or 38mm weber with a bcf2 cam and exhaust is a good basic set up on a kent, i haven't done this but been told is a good basic set up. tyhe reason they use the 34/34 or 38 mm is because the 32/36 is much harder to tune cheers luke

i have put a few cortina GT 1600 engines in my esky. Firstly the the accelerator linkages are different but I have had many intake manifolds with a block welded to them so you can use the escort accelerator cable. the sumps are different so you will need a new sump gasket so you can swap sumps. I have also found that many 1600 GT motors are auto and require a spigot bearing to convert to use with a manual gearbox. but these minor mods are worth it.........

Hi thanks for the info, dose that mean if i can get hold of a GT head inlet manifold and carbie, and a decent 4-1 outlet manifod, that could make a hell of a difference, The box standard engine thats in, runs well with no smoke and starts every time. it's event more reliable than my partners car.

yeah basicly if ya get a standard 1600 a webber 32/36 and a nice set of headers, the only thing the get had was larger vavles witch make a bit of a diffrence and a cam but there are so many better cams on the market nowadays, it would personally go with what i said about for a nice basic set up thats not to dear

cam regrind $100

webber and manifold $100

exhaust $300

lifters regound $40

that will give you just as good power or better than a gt 1600 for not to much $$$

have a look at this video its basicly the same set up but with low compression making 90hp and sounds great in my opinion

hi thanks for the advice diggindanddirt, were would you go and get the work/machining done to the cams, followers etc etc as this is virgin territory to me. Can you buy them off the shelf?, doing the work on the engine won't be a problem.

If you're not already a member, join the RS owners club in WA. There are members there who have a wealth of experience with small Ford engines and would be able to give you sound advice. They might even have the parts you need or advise where you can get them in Perth. Get a 711M block based engine from Mk2 Escort. Don't use the earlier 1600GT Cortina engine. They are not as good strength wise. The 711M uses a flat head. The Cortina GT head has small combustion chambers. The later Escort head is better but you would need to get bigger inlet valves to match the size of the Cortina GT valves. Get the head converted to run on unleaded. I think if you were lucky enough to get hold of the engine out of an early Mk2 Escort Ghia they were fitted with the uprated inlet manifold and dual throat Weber. If you want a mild tune then you can use the GT profile cam. For something a bit more exciting consider Kent cams 234. Buy new cam followers. They are not too expensive and are readily available from Burtons in the UK.

looks like i might have some 1600GT gear from a capri lined up from capri clinic in armadale, find kevin very helpful for alot of gear. thanks for all the advice. will keep posted on progress. thankfull the esky dose not req alot to do to it. just req some wings and drivers side floor. oh aye, a respray too looking at english white or baby blue like the frogeye sprite?
