Hi Guys, has anyone looked into using an air cond system from a small modern car that would fit into the exiting heater box?  I am thinking that a system from a modern small 4cyl wouldn't drain much power and would be small enough to fit under the dash and integrate into the exiting system so that it all looks stock.

Has anyone done this or looked into it?
Thanks.

Hi Steve,

unless your Capri is an "every day car", or you're sure to run it for a few minutes AT LEAST once a week, it will end in tears.
I'm aware you're in WA and if you can use the "air" regularly, then it won't effect a powerful engine like the Essex V6, especially if you fit the modern rotary compressor like a Sanden. Unit of the day was a York reciprocating pistons type which were quite problematic: My 1978 XC Falcon Coupe is fitted with one which i don't use as the car only sees the road once a month, which is not enough for a York System. So it sits there adding weight, which I will not remove due to buying the XC brand new in 1978 and want to keep it original. Maybe one day I'll re-instate its operation if I can use it more often.
An evap small enough to fit inside with the heater element that constantly remains hot with no "off tap" may be a no-no. Try and give it its own box and fan for best results, if room allows. Maybe remove the heater altogether if youre in a particularly warm part of WA ?

........... in that case, reward yourself with an A/C System...........correct belt tension is very important, but better to be a tad loose than overtight till you get a tension guage on it.

Your Capri will be even cooler than the rest !

Many years ago I made a unit up to fit the V6. Used a rotary style compressor mounted on fabricated engine mount and under the oil filter. Removed the heater and fitted a blank plate. The inside unit was mounted to the 4 original heater lugs, vents fed to the outer dash vents and I machined bezels to suit Falcon XD rectangular vents and fitted to the dash where the radio normally goes. The inside unit was an under dash evaporator and fabricated an aluminium housing to feed with flex pipes to the vents.

Eventually removed as it was too much clutter under the bonnet with the condensor, compressor and drive and dryer. Fortunately I spent many years making specials for cars as a job. Often before standard units were made for cars.
It is probably a lot more work than you want to do without machine tools.
