I am trying to find written information as to the legalities of a fuel injection conversion in Vic. As far as I can tell/find, no emissions laws need to be adhered to and it is treated as a 'carburettor swap' ?????? Can someone point me to the right information?
I want to make sure that

1. it is legal,
2. I dont require an engineers cert or VASS check and
3. that I have the information with me in case I am pulled over and it is 'questioned'.

Car is early 71 model escort with 2lt pinto (Recent RWC and vicroads check)

given that your car is Pre '76/ ADR27a, i don't think emissions are an issue.

My problem is, I was once told that the emissions must match the year the donor injection setup was from...ie much the same way when preforming a later model engine swap. I dont believe this is the case, however I want to find all the relevant documentation that shows that I can perform the swap legally.

We've all been there when the bonnets been lifted or questioned mods on your car, unfortunately your word or knowledge doesn't mean s#%t unless you can document it with evidence otherwise. A shiny injection setup in an older car is going to be questioned, and for your average roadside policeperson (excuse the generalization) they're going to start to reach for that big yellow sticker.

Call me whatever, but I like to be prepared. It has got me out of trouble in the past (A roadside decibel reading that did not conform to ADR testing standards.)

Speak directly to an engineer. I recently spoke to one about engineering my car for an upcoming engine swap (ssshhh) and because its a 75 model and pre adr27a its alot easier then I originally anticipated it being. Won't even require a cat converter, but will need some sort of emissions test which he was very confident of it passing.

I know exactly where you're coming from hence my persistance to have my Zetec engineered 100%. I don't want to go through the expense and hard work to modify my car only to have a cop having a bad day slam a defect on it. I think engineering initially will save a heap of heart ache down the track.

The rules differ greatly so check with your local authorities. For instance, in SA my emissions must conform to the donor engine meaning OEM ECU, intake, sensors and a CAT.

I too have copped critisism in the past as to why I'm going through this much effort and I can answer in 3 words - PEACE OF MIND!

Thanks for the words of advice. I remember reading your drama with the OEM intake vs engine mounts. I questioned HIS logic but at the end of the day, he is the one with the signature[:I] and you have to do what keeps him happy!

I was really hoping to find some documentation though. Nearly everyone says 'it's fine' (pre27A) however I cant pinpoint 'where' it actually says this in writing.

Engineer cert is peice of mind. you're correct, however if I am 100% legal, and have the evidence to support it, I would like to try and avoid doing so just yet.... [B)]

Shaun I thought it was easy to find. Vic Roads laws are written in the sand on StKilda Beach or was it Elwood...hmmm not sure now. [x2x]

I have all the roadworthy regulations and VSI sheets at work. I can have a look at them to see if it says it anywhere. I think it would be under VSI8 which is the section for modifications.

That would be good. I have someone who is passing on my details to a vicroads guy who is going to ring me...[x2x] Apparently he is an escort ethusiast, so I will know once and for all.

If the VSI8 form is the same one I have, it mentions carburettor changes but nothing on fuel injection,

I am worried that fuel injection wont be covered un 'carburettor' by the local officer...[}:)]

I think to be 100% sure you don't get pinged you'll have to ask an engineer.

Had a call back from VicRoads today from one of the inspectors..

It all good!!!

Have to follow a few guidelines but the basic thing is as the car preADR27a I can fit it with the standard ford ECU.

Modifications to fuel tank or fitment of a surge tank would require a VASS certificate.

The guy really new his stuff, (thanks to Ted for the contact) even mentioning the original MK1RS2000 and there use of IDFs.... He was making sure I'm under the 10% power increase

Anyway, now have a reference name and number..
