looking at refurbishing the wheels on the young blokes mk2. they are a set of 13x7 rebels. The dillema is, do you paint the black first then polish the spokes and rim outer, or polish first then mask then paint. Any thoughts.

cheers Ted

I'd say paint first then polish because its going to be hard to not mark the polished surface when your painting the other bits. (if that makes sense?)

yep, definately paint first, get some thinners and a rag and touchup any over spray, or whatver, this will also clean the metal making the polishing easier

Definitely polish to perfection, perfectly clean all wax, grease and silicone off, mask up, and paint.

By painting first the paint may become damaged when polishing ie wear paint edges down, or slip and scratch etc.

Times that by 2. When i did my RS Alloys, I polished first then masked and painted. Can be a tedious job but well worth it at the end. Use thinners and a toothbrush to clean all the crap and as much of the old paint off, polish where needed, reclean, mask and paint. I hope your getting your young bloke to help with thi

before and after photos, about 4 hrs per wheel. sanded off all the machining marks on the spokes with an occilating sander 180 grit, then wet and dry up to 400, then polished with a buffing wheel, then by hand. probably not good enough for a concourse car, but will be ok for a daily driver
