I need 2" off the front of my esky. I have been told cutting the springs although illegal, is still a cheap and effective way of doing it. Another way I've been told is to cut the bottom hat from the strut leg and reweld it 2 inches lower.

Pros and cons please. Thanks

Cutting springs was the usual method in the '70s,'80s,'90s to lower the car on a satdy arvo! Yes it is illegal too, cause if you cut too much off the spring will fall out of its seat. Tie wire (2mm galv) helps them stay put. You can lower the spring platform about 2in depending on tyres/offset etc.....i did this when a pr of spring weren't quite right, is best to completely empty the strut of its insert as it may explode(if its gas) when welding.

Do you mean a Pinto[88]

Ok. There's a mob here in Bris who'll reset the standard coils 2" for half the price of new springs. Will that still leave the problem of not sitting between the seats correctly?

One problem I've run into is the brake line on the strut leg. The little tag is NOT slotted so I need to disconnect my brake lines to get the struts out. What a PITA! Is there a way around this?

Most new springs such as Kings Springs SL & SSL are usually variable rate (ie coils clooser together on one end) so you get a stiffer, lowered spring that won't fall out....

Are you sure it is not slotted? Sometimes the retainer clip can be deceptive, should be a half height nut on the flexi hose end clamping a spring clip onto the slotted bracket...

Cheers

If you cut the spring's make you must fit shouter shocks the spring must be held in its boot or housing it must not be lose when the car wheels are jacked off the ground
over here you are not aloud to have the spring wired in it must fit in its set

hope that helps

((The little tag is NOT slotted so I need to disconnect my brake lines )) i sloted mine [88][:x)]

I'll slot mine too when I eventually pull them out again..

And I've decided to order custom length progressive rate springs from King springs. The coil will remain full length so it stays in the seats, but will be very soft and progress to a harder setting when compressed.
