Hi Fellas,
Im after some thoughts on upgrading the brakes on my Mk1 Capri.
Its finally home after 3 years storage, and of course one of the brake cylinders has seized. A brief test test drive in preparation had it pulling comically onto the nature strip, so it made the trip back on a tilt tray.
No major drama really, a decent brake overhaul was next on the cards anyhow.

So the rest of the car is pretty std and original, warm 1600, cam, balanced, extractors, and 14" Minilights (Superlights).
Std suspension inc 1600 struts and existing brakes are std 1600 disks, solid rotors, and rear drums.Booster was rebuilt a few years ago, and the brakes were operational and ok, but typical Capri brakes really and never too crash hot to begin with.
I know that its never going to stop as well as my daily car, which has 300/330 mm ventilated 4 piston in a 1365kg car, but it needs to be better than it is now/was.

So do I:
-have existing calipers rebuilt, new std pads, new disks, and rear drum shoes replaced?
- upgrade the above using some Escort combo?eg spaced M16 with vented disks? replace rear shoes
- a Willwood or the like pack with 2 piston calipers, replace rear drums? Likely to be much of an improvement?

I know it seems strange, but the rear drums would probably have to stay, I'm hesitant to change to 4 wheel disks for insurance, plus the need for proportioning valve etc. so the ideal solution would be something that is an upgrade that fits under the 14"rims without being too much of a modification. Cost isnt too much of an issue, and Id replace all of the lines also.

suggestions on any of the above greatly welcome.

You could go the well trusted 2.8i vents and Volvo 4 pot, this setup uses the same master and works a treat. I've this setup on my mk2 escort since 1998 and the braking distance reduced heaps, never got brake fade even after a 50km thrash thru the Adelaide hills.
Later installed rear disk using cut down Volvo hats and Nissan pulsar rear calipers, improved a bit more braking but mainly for looks .
Burton Power sell kits using Wilwood calipers and rotors etc if a bolt on arrangement is more suited

Hi
on this subject, has anybody found a Master Cylinder from a different car that fits straight into the place of a
Capri master ? (looks identical to Mk1 or Mk2 Escort)
I believe half the problem with the factory Master is that ridiculous Valve between the reservoir and the primary piston seal; never seen this set up in over 50 years of working on all makes and models from 1930 to 2019. Little wonder !
Mk4 (TC) Cortina looks pretty good, but ports on wrong side and possibly one thread needs adapter

thanks guys,
Marty ive read of the Volvo setup in the past, but for my skillset and time, a full off the shelf kit is the way to go.
I saw Burtons sell a Hi Spec  rear disk conversion set also, which is a little more attractive as much of the guesswork has been done. The cars insured with Shannons, I might talk to them and see about whats required with brake mods, regarding converting to rear disk. If its a commercially available kit that might be looked at more favourably?
Hi Spec possible front kit:

or these are Willwood versions of the M16 Escort and V6 Capri calipers, again for the front

Deano, the Burton or rally design Wilwood kit will be the way to go, I've used their 285 kit with all hardware except lines and works a treat, the option for pads is massive (I went for fast road and they need to warn up to bite well), though I'd buy pads from USA being much cheaper.
BEEVEE ,. I forgot to add my escort wears a TE/TF Cortina master cyl which bolts direct to Escorts/Capri pattern, the Piston sizes are the same or very similar so the pedal feel is the same . Yes the outlets are on the opposite side but eh, a small mod. On my mk2 van I used a Ford laser master but it needed an adapter making to fit as it's vertical mount and spacing is different.
I'm sure there's something to bolt up with minimal mods. Datsun 120y, old Gemini, Corolla, Celica etc.

I have the HiSpec 260mm kit on the RS but are yet untested. Regarding modifying any braking system away from OEM would likely require engineering input.

for those who like happy endings (dont we all), I bit the bullet and taken the above suggestions, and went for the HiSpec kit.The kit has arrived, along with new some wheel bearings, braided lines etc.
The chosen  HiTec 4 pot calipers look just to be the same as the Volvo ones anyway Marty, so tried and trusted for sure.
The Capri might be in for some projects this winter, especially if Annas bumperettes eventuate.
Will post pics once done.

Hi Deano,
Hoppers Stoppers use the XA/XB master cylinder for their upgrade kit.  Fittings pretty much the same as Escort. I was going to get one to try and fix the brakes on my RS, ended up getting a spacer for the booster actuator to get proper pedal happening, so ended up not needing one.  I used a Mazda 626 1" master cylinder which fits fine but the plunger is recessed ,hence my huge pedal travel before brakes came on. Not any more- brakes come on quick! Len

Hi Deano, cool you got an uprated brake setup . Was reading the saga with the bumpers and with the apocalypse about , they (if posted) could take months to start moving .
I sent a flash tuner for my focus back to UK for updates and it took 11wks, then 3wks wait till the factory starts up again, then only 3 days back by FedEx !!

I have a relatively simple rear disc conversion if interested. Have you fitted and tested the HiSpec kit yet? I think the HiSpec use Volvo pads.
