Hey Guys,

Know that the diff in the Red RS isnt standard and just trying to work out what is in it...the part number on the tag seems to be

73AA-4005BB
Ratio 3.89

is what i can make out, the underline bits were a little harder to read so not 100% sure its them

Is this a Capri diff? Can i also know what year and stuff if i need to replace axles/bearings/seals??
Cheers Guys

Hi Bryan.

Trying to remember if this was the diff type in yours. I'm 95% sure yours is a borg warner out of a Mk1 Escort.

Was this the one?

yeah thats looking pretty much like it, i have a pick and i remember seeing borg warner on the neck of it.

Are they any stronger or the like? what's the main differences with them? Different axles? Axle bearings??

Cheers

3.89 borwarner as pictured is a 1300 mk1 escort diff, they are a less prefered diff because the housing needs to be spread to remove the centre, compared to the salsbury witch just unbolts out the front.

the only advantage is mk1 axles are sightly larger, allthough due to the axles being older the differance between mk1/mk2 axle strengh is debatable.

also if its a mk1 diff, your spring perch on the diff will have been changed, due to mk1 being 50mm and mk2 being 60mm

attempted pics of mine...also is the width any different from the mk2?
Would i be better off taking it out and putting in the normal?? or just leave it?

i wouldn't change it unless something is broken or you want to change the ratio, how eva if it did break i wouldn't put another back in.

width is the same.

also just a side note ive ran 5 left springs in my old mk2 and found them a bit to stiff for anything with a bit of power, with a stock 1300 there great fun+ cancel out anything axle tramp but they dont get the power down for anything with some power.

Cheers Luke.

Yeah thats the plan, for now i think ill leave it in unless something happens. Do want to put an original diff back in but it can wait!

So when going for bearing and stuff i guess i will just have to remember its a mk1 BW! Easy!

Yeah the rear is pretty stiff but is low tho so all good!!
