When does an electronic fuel pump (2.5- 4psi) and electronic ignition (pertronix) become essential for crossflow motors? Will these two upgrades make much difference to a standard motor with headers & twin choke carb?

Electronic Ignition system makes for less maintenance due to points wear and changing timing as a result also eliminates bounce and misfire at high revs. I am still to be convinced of power gains.
Mechanical fuel pump can more than supply twin down or side draft carbies with ease.

So in short, you dont need to convert.

Having said that, I run Luminition on my escort and MG for the set and forget until next years service factor, and twin electric pumps in the escort (one on stand by, switched from the dash) for competition convenience.

One advantage of the electric pump is quicker starting, especialy if the car is unused for a time, just turn the key and wait a few seconds for the carby to be primed, then crank it over, usualy starts straight aweay.

If only.... haha. The theory is right, but my electronically pumped engine is a right pain to start even with it. That's another story though!

It'll be a dog to start (with the electric pump) if you don't have a pressure regulator in the line, it'll flood the carby every time
