So I decided to get my 1600 ready for transplant today and saw this when I took off the inlet manifold. What would cause such a mess? When I removed the thermostat it looked a little rusty inside the head, but not too bad. I also removed the gunk from the head where the inlet manifold coolant passes through. I've taken off the water pump, that seems okay. Would it be worthwhile removing the head for cleaning & further inspection? There's no water in the oil and the engine ran great when it was in the donor car.

Very common, this motor has been unused for some time and has had very little corrosion inhibitor in the cooling system and the crap on the thermostat comes as a result of the alloy housing self sacrificing. Its usually no big drama, you can still buy new housings and clean out the inlet water jacket.

I did cover the subject @ Tafe during my electrical apprenticeship. Same principal as sacraficial blocks of zinc used on the hulls of steel ships. Interesting thanks.

Yeah no big deal, clean out, replace the thermostat parts and keep going.

I used the specified 192 thermostat from my 1.3 and picked up a new housing from the machinist who put new guides & unleaded seats in my 1.6 head (not that the engine really needed it done [B)]

I'm also going to buy some special type of sock that slides over the top hose outlet and filters all the crud that will still be in the block/head and take it out after a few runs.
