Getting near to the end of a 3 year dreaming, saving, talking about, planing, doing, project & Ive struck a snag with my dipstick! Got to the stage where if I can get it in I cant get it out & vias versa, that is if I can get it out I cant get it in
(what a problem on fathers day)
Anyway I'm sure some of you who have fitted side drafts must have some dip stick bending instructions left over somewhere, please help

Cheers Reg

All i did was rotate the tube around so that the dipstick pointed in a different direction.

Its a bit of trial and error but no big deal

Yep, roatate it around and/or bend it a little.

I have mine so that it is against number 4 runner on the inlet manifold between the firewall. Fits fine. I have mine cable tied to the runner for a bit of extra support although it is not needed.

Excuse my ignorance, but does the Pinto use a blade style dipstick or a flexi coil type as seen on some of the Kent motors? the coil type may solve your problem

Mine has a blade type JR, so I assume they all do? and yeah I just rotated my tube too.

Be careful bending the dipstick tube. When they pop out of the block and blow the oil out, you feel like a dipstick.
The dipstick can be cut to the full line and it clears the spinning crank.
Very nice Regs.

Thanks for the kind words & ideas, cutting the end off mite be the go as its the last 2" that is causing the problem it seems to hit something with that amount left to go in making a clank noise. also have an old engine that I'm using to experiment on.
Just can't wait to here those brand new 40s start up

No need to bend the tube, just turn it around till you reach a suitable location where you can then extract the dipstick. Is more difficult if you have the twin carby linkages with the wheels at either end (yuk), but it can be done. I have also seen a tag welded onto the top of the tube to locate it to the manifold bolt too.

If it is hitting something in the sump, it should be the horizontal baffle (providing you have the Aussies Escort 2Lt steel sump and not the Cortina one). If you bend the dipstick a little to try to ensure it goes through the baffle hole cleanly, there should be no issues.

In one of my engines (I have 3 with twins) the dipstik sometimes hits the baffle, but with a wiggle it makes it in... This car has been driven hard in Autocrosses for 7 or 8 years and never had an issue with the dipstick other than the tube having to be resealed in to the block (use a good silastic cement)...

It aint rocket science.... Youv'e already done the hardest parts...

Talkling to a older bloke here in newcastle who has played with everything small ford be carefull how much you adjust the dipstick tube as it could hit the crank as it rotates giving you a fulse readign on the dipstick as it will rub on the crank. O
