Hi Guys,

hoping no-one's "climbing the walls" during this crazy lockdown ! .........   "It's A Great Life If You Stay Strong"!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what material one might use to re-make the Front Capri Parcel Shelf ?
Ive been looking on the www for "repros" with no show so assume everyone makes their own ?

Also, does anyone know if the "Eleven 165HP Specials" had an improved Intake Manifold so that the "W" adaptor
invented to go below Carby inside Manifold to distribute fuel more evenly for front and rear cylinders,  became un-needed ?

Any input most appreciated

Bernie

Hi Bernie,

I do a replacement front and rear parcel shelf in fibreglass.  Strong and similar in detail.

The 11 specials used the 1972 newly produced UK D port engine.  This engine also used the W plate and used the same spec (except for 40dfav or 38dgas carby, RS3100 60 th pistons and the XX pack ) all the way through to end of UK production in 1983.  The explanation for the W plate from Ford engineers in 1970 was to restrict air flow to the middle cylinders thus evening the flow to the 6 cylinders. The carby was then able to better control fuel mixtures to all cylinders resulting in a smoother running engine.  Fuel droplets need turning into a vapour format for efficient burning.  Two ways to do this is to have longer fuel runners and or runner restrictions, thus allowing fuel droplets to vapourise prior to cylinder entry.
Dyno figures on my engine dyno show with removal of the W plate a 14 HP increase on a stock engine (125HP stock).  If still running this plate check the condition of the plate and mounting screws.  This plate has been known to disintergrate with bits entering the cylinder causing valve and piston damage.
Is anyone aware of any other ford engine using a similar W plate?

Regards
John

The 165hp capris don’t use anything special it’s just a stock D port motor. They were more efficient than the oval port, but there are no special secret parts, the motors went on to power the facelift MK2 and 3 in the same form. Front parcel shelf as per original in cardboard is something I used to get made up and sell, but my supplier has the stamps locked up in a factory he cannot access, they will become available again in the next few months

Thanks John and John,
your great info is much appreciated !

I couldn't be happier with the 38DGAS on my V6 D-port; those Italians know their Webers.(no bias intended)!
My spark plugs tell the story of even fuel to all 6 so the "W" insert would be superfluous .

Could both of you tell me prices for Fibre-Glass and Cardboard alternatives please ? Cheers

In my 50 years on the tools, I've never seen any car with an added "plate" to aid "even" fuel flow,
and Ive sen my fair share.

GTV6 John I'd be interested in a card top also, if you end up reproducing.

I have a good base, but the crude cardboard top I made many years ago has given up.
Happy for it to just be the flat stamping, unassembled, and can wait a few months.

Stay sane too Bernie, hope Dan lets you out to join us Sunday

Thanks Deano .............   where are you going Sunday ?

Re P/shelf ; What's the cost and lead time for Cardboard or Fibre-glass please John and John, as I have my Dash in more pieces I was hoping for and if none can be had in the next week or 2, I may have to re-assemble all till next chance to do again.
Thanks

Ok good news from the shelf guy he rang and said he now has access to the parts he needs to make up the Capri front shelf fascias. So within the next 2 weeks I should have them available once more. Price will be $150 for the assembled card section with cover flap. You will need to supply your own front lip strip and base board

Hi John
The front Strip is clearly separate and "use your own" as you say.

I thought the "Base Board" was part of the "P/Shelf Ceiling and Walls" ?

The base is separate it’s MDF the card section attaches to it. The strip attaches to the base board. So 3 parts are needed. I supply the card part.
