Hi all,

I live in the nanny state (WA), so have a sneaking suspicion that my van project won't pass a roadworthy inspection without the rubber dust boots that fit over the front struts ('cause without them the car might spontaneously explode or something). Anybody got a spare set they'd like to part with?

Thanks.

I had a Escort go thru our testing station a long time ago and it never had the dust covers, tho it had the rubber bump stops which is more what they will be concentrating on. And I cut them back 1/3rd to allow more travel. Can't help with the covers as they have all died from oil saturation.

Hey mate, just been out to the shed and my spare set are missing the boots too so can't help there. Are they 2ltr or 1600 struts? Will keep an eye out...
Cheers Drew

Did the Escort come standard with dust boots as I can't see reference in the parts catalogue? From memory there was a minor dust guard incorporated with the bump stop.

Good question Paul; I'm only assuming they did because my other car has them. Mind you, I know they are aftermarket inserts, so maybe they came with them. Thanks for the photo too; is part 3025 supposed to be the bump stop that Marty referred to? I may end up raiding car number one for the boots to fit to car number two. Both cars have 2 litre struts, so although the swap may be painful to do, at least I know they will fit.

Next problem - getting the old inserts out - one is different to the other, they have different means of screwing them in, and I have the right tool to undo neither! Any suggestions for getting the buggers out?

I'm assuming so.

Car number two seems to be lacking those too! Oh well, it will have to do without them, and the boots will hide them at least.

My hat's off to you Drew for mentioning you once used some bike tool to get to the strut collars off - worked a treat! The old struts are disassembled, and they have matching aftermarket inserts; just different collars. I think they have bump stops built into them (I know another set I have does anyway), so I'm not worried about that. I'll probably still pull the boots off the no. 1 car, especially if I can do so without removing the entire front end. Thanks for your help everyone.

Follow up post to show what a stock combination bump stop / dust boot looks like (for reference). I have my suspicions about whether it should be used with lowered cars though, as it could prevent sufficient suspension travel (the bump stop portion is about 2.5" or 63mm). That could explain why they weren't fitted to car #2.

Capris, Twin Cams and Mk2 Escort 2Litre all list the same bump stop/dust boot Part No. 69EB 3025 AA.
Escort Mk1's after 1970 other than Twin Cams and Mk2 1300/1600's list the same bump stop/dust boot Part No 69AB 3025 BA.
