  • volvo 240 brakes: how good are they?

i have a pair of volvo240 callipers and discs to suit setting on a shelf and rather then going out and buying a set of AP brakes, just wondering how the 240's will go slowing down a 225kw escort,
 
any imput would be appreciated. thanks

Bang for buck they are pretty hard to beat and there are a number of guys using this combination on turbo'd applications making similar power.
 
You may struggle getting them engineered though (if needed) as the bolt holes need slotting.

With the right pad and rotor combination they are great and will more than adequately pull up an Escort.  the only negative really is they are heavy, particularly when compared to AP's or Willwood etc. but where can you get those for the cost of a pair of Volvo's ...

well i bought a complete set of struts a yr or so ago all set up with the volvos so i cant really complain about price of them at all, i got wilwoods on my other escort which is why they still sitting on the shelf... anyone know where you get the kits for them from? they will do for now anyway

Give this dude a buzz for all things Volvo - I got a rebuild kit off him for around $53 from memory.  Nice guy too

are the volvo calipers lighter than the std escort caliper ?

No and there is two types of Volvo caliper, ATE and Girling, both have weaknesses and require a caliper spacer kit if you want use all available pad area with decent rotor.
 
Best bang for buck will always be Type 16, vented rotors with good pads, fluid and lines.

I have never heard of spacing the Volvo calipers before.  Can you elaborate a bit more?
 
You also need to space the Type 16 caliper too don't you?
