Thanks heaps,

The inserts in mine are actually from a Camry???  As such the insert shaft is a bit thinner than the escort one.  There has been a collar machined up to located the thinner shaft inside the strut top so if I get the Burton tops and then drill to suit the shaft I will be good to go.

Thanks for your help

Matt

I have seen Diahatsu Charade strut tops in a Mk2.
They are small enough to get some caster.

Hi Matt,
Sorry to hijack but maybe you are way overcomplicating fitting your struts ?
What if you redrilled the 3 mounting bolt holes in the tops of the inner guards on the same PCD as the mounting holes on the strut tops, the bolts are 8mm so 9mm holes would be fine and give you a bit of room for error
I happen to know that your strut legs will give you a couple of degs more camber even if they are mounted in the std position, you will still have room to move for more camber and limited castor ( but maybe enough) adjustment
If you still want more adjustment open the small mark2 hole up
No need to buy or make up anything

Avon
Heres the Wilkinson version.  I have them in my car.  They have urethane bushes for a bit of give but they also do a solid version.  Don't give much camber at all though - I mainly have them for the spherical bearing which makes living with a quickrack much easier.

Hey guys,

Thanks everyone for the input. I really like the ones you have from burton's, sundowner. I went on the website and was quoted about 135 pound so at the moment thats just under $200 and thats including delivery. Seems like a very good price. Looks the goods too!

sundowner when you do get to take it for a drive id be interested to know how it handles. I wanted to get adjustable tca's initially but i figured id have a very high chance of getting defected if a cop took a peak under the car so i want to steer clear for now.

Matt, those camry shocks, are they Konis part no. 86-1835? Those are what im looking at getting. I dont see much issue in getting different sleeves and drilling them out to suit the inserts, seems simple enough.

Hi Ryan,

As I bought the struts with everything already done I can't confirm that that's the right part #.

I do know that the Koni's I have are shorter than the capri / escort ones and as such I the struts were cut shorter than usual and I am running a higher rated spring to allow for this.

I have heard of people using RX7 shocks as well.  If you can get the diameter of the shock casing and then the inside diameter of the strut tube you can then see what other options are around.

If you need anything else let me know.

Cheers,

Matt

Thanks Matt,

The ones i mentioned are shorter than standard too, so they may be the same as the ones you have. The springs i bought are 1inch lowered so they will work well with each other.

I never knew it was as simple as just matching the dimensions! Thanks for the help again.

No probs,

Some struts will require a hole drilled in the base of the struts as they have a bolt that is done up this way.  The RX7's are setup this way from memory.

Good luck

Hi guys, sorry its been so long since i have updated this, been a bit tight money-wise so saving up to do things on the escort is a very slow process.

After finally saving the money for it i had the 22mm Kmac bar fitted and had the whole front end polybushed.

Still have the standard 2L springs fitted and standard shocks, but with the bushes and sway bar alone there was a huge difference. Turns in a lot sharper, is more direct and more predictable. Good thing i got it done when i did, the bloke at the suspension place said the steering coupling was almost non-existent.

Here are some pics to show where the wheel sits in relation to the car. Much better than before. I didn't expect such a good improvement from just a sway bar and bushes!
