Some of Australia’s best-known ‘old warriors’ will be shedding their dust covers to celebrate 50 years of touring car racing at Queensland’s favourite circuit, in the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars from August 12-14.
Allan Moffat’s iconic 1969 Trans Am Boss Mustang and Norm Beechey’s famous 1970 Australian Touring Car Championship-winning HT GTS 350 Monaro will be coming from the ...Bowden Collection to be seen and heard at the meeting, while the late ‘Pete’ Geoghegan’s GTA Mustang that took the touring car crown three years running from 1967-1969 is also expected to put in a special appearance.
All three cars enjoyed some memorable battles at Lakeside over the years and the chance to see them together on track again – even if just for demonstration laps – will be a very special nostalgic moment for enthusiasts.
The old warriors will be joined on track at the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars by an expected full 30-car grid of Group C and Group A cars, many of which have not been back to the circuit since they raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship in the 1970 and 1980s. Expect to see some fierce rivalry between the Falcons, Commodores, BMWs, Mazda RX-7s, Ford Sierras and the giant-killing Nissan GTRs.
As with the previous three 50th anniversary race meetings held this year, Lakeside Park has been given a special reprieve from its usual 95dba noise restriction for the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars, due to the significance of the anniversary. Such is the popularity of this event amongst fans and racers alike that a huge crowd of motor sport fans is expected across the weekend.
Four-time Australian Touring Car Champion and multiple Lakeside winner Jim Richards will be there to meet and greet fans, and is expected to also drive demonstration laps in some of the famous touring cars from the past.
In addition to the huge thrill of watching historic Group C and Group A take to the track, spectators will be treated to a weekend of non-stop action with Group N (historic touring cars pre-1973), HQ Holdens, Geminis and the thunderous roar of the Australian Trans Am Championship.

The Trans Am Championship is always a crowd favourite, with the American big iron sliding and smoking their way around the track, constantly defying the laws of adhesion. Now with a great mix of Camaros and Mustangs as well as a Mercury Comet, a Ford Galaxie, a Dodge Challenger and an AMC Javelin the Australian Trans Am Championship really is a fantastic tribute to the thrilling Trans Am racing of the late ‘60s/early ‘70s.
The Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars is the last of four 50th anniversary celebration events for Lakeside and is set to be an outstanding weekend for motoring fans, with a huge range of touring cars represented on-track and in trackside vehicle displays. With some of Australia’s most famous tin tops gathered at Queensland’s spiritual home of motor racing, the Lakeside Classic Festival of Touring Cars is one race meeting you simply can’t afford to miss!

Hahaha absolutely! A few months back I was at Lakeside for another classic touring car meet and the Longhurst Sierra was there but I never got to see it on the track :(

I would love to run with you all.
but have forgotten how to drive it.

Dad says he has to take it for it's first lap around Lakeside, so the plastic holds it's memory.

The drum brake shoes are not extended lenth and are bonded to the wrong half of the shoe.
Hoodlining pockets for the rod stays are not large enough to fit and still saving for tyres.
