Actaully only 170 were brought in, which included 1 crash test. So only 169 ST170's sold to the public.

Minus from that at least half a dozen here are now dead.

They sold them in big numbers in Europe and the States (SVT) an up until just recently Ford Motorsport US were flogging these off as crate motors.

Ive been following the Zetec movement a bit recently.. and im a bit confused by Tex's ST170 donk. Tex you refer to it as a st170 zetec, but the rocker cover proudly displays 'duratec'.. so what's the go here? is it a beefed up zetec that sports the duratec name badge??

and further to that, is this the same donk offered by FOrd US as the svt zetec??

thanks in advance!

Shes all zetec mate, iron block, alloy head, Real duratec's all alloy,
the zetecs very compatible with pinto bellhousings. Duratec badge is just a case of Henry trying to update his range. The motor has got some goodies over the standard Zetec, youll find more if you search the net.

Hope your ditching the dual mass flywheel and clutch...swap with a std zetec setup,it'l be much easier

yeah I ended up using a 1800 blacktop flywheel, redrilled to take the pinto clutch and pressure plate, would recomend this as its easy. as far as the SVT I think they have the variable cam timing on the exhaust only.

cheers TEX, i thought that was the case, since you didn't mention much about bellhousings in your build. the st170 looks like a worthwhile buy.. maybe I can find a couple here in germany...

Tex, the VCT is on the inlet side only, not exhaust, which is to work with the double inlet runners(short & long)to optimise power with economy..my Focus ST hits a power surge at around 5000rpm, i still get around 6lt/100km !
The_cheese, you will have more luck finding a ST170 in Germany/Europe as around 10,600 were sold(3dr,5dr,wagon,sedan)where as we Ozzys only got about 250 [:-(] (All blue 3drs)

Martymexico - Well after a shallow scout its easy to see that the UK market is brimming with these puppies. theres plenty to be found on ebay.co.uk

As for Germany, without contacting the wreckers in my local area (bavaria), i haven't come up with any hits. Although after a bit of a ringaround im sure I could source a unit here.

As for price, id say tex's unit for $1450 was a very very nice price - considering the limited run in AUS. I did see one St170 donk in the archives of a german noticeboard go for 1200euros 2 years ago. It only had 11000 kms! Even with the pissweak euro that is still no cheaper than what tex paid...

However considering availability in AUS, if I can find a unit here in germany before my return in 2011, I will certainly snap it up. Were prolly gonna rent out some container space for the move anyway - the missus has some things she refuses to part with. Maybe there are some other interested parties???

And regarding the variable inlet cam.. I learen't about the dual length inlet runners the other day. neat little trick actually. My question is - once youve got a ST170 donk in your esky, with the obligatory motorbike TB's, does enabling the VCT still bring much of a benefit?

And furthermore... wouldn't it be smarter to keep the dual-length inlet, or do throttlebodies perform significantly better (id guess in terms of throttle response for sure)?

Cheers guys!

Its prolly worth trying the VCT 1st and then remove it and compare, most uk installed 170's leave it on, just easier to leave it there. I know there is some more (6)bhp to gain by shifting the exh cam timing a few degs, As my Focus is coming up for a new cam belt soon i'll be installing a adj exh cam wheel and a Esslinger inlet camshaft.
The dual length inlet will be a pain in the b&tt to get working(they even fail on ST's !), run 45/48 webers or bike carbs/TB's 40mm/42mm, any bigger wont gain any extra power.

Yeah Marty, you're right, I was thinking of some other motor, I'm sure Iv'e seen one with the vct on the exhaust? Turbo? As far as VCT your will need to have it on or turn it on real early. Mine is set up to turn on at 1000 rpm and revs clean to 7400. On dyno not any benefit doing it differently with the setup I have.
