Hi

I'm in the early stages of a 1.8 zetec conversion and i'm trying to decide what to do on the induction side of things. I aready have a set of twin 40 dellorto's so they would be the cheapest solution but i understand they will probably give me a flat spot in progression phase. I don't want to go EFI

Is there anyone running a 'normal' set of dellorto's or webers on a zetec without the 5 progression holes? how bad is the flat spot? is there a way to get around it?

On bike carbs do you have a similar problem or does the CV design compensate for it. What actually causes the flat spot? With an ignition MAP can you get around it by increasing the advance for a given TPS posn?

I think you will find its the webbers that require the 5th progression hole....
Not sure how bad it its... bad enough for people to redesign pregression jets....
haven't heard any complaints on bike carbs...

Decided to stick with the dellorto's and Megajolt combo. Picked a new manifold up from feebay.....the casting is fairly average but should clean up OK.

Off to the 'parts wanted' section now for coil-pack, edis module

Do you think the coil would be compatible with the Megajolt ie does the blacktop coil have a 3 pin connector aside from the spark plug leads?

My understanding is that silver top engines ran a seperate EDIS module, blacktops had edis built into the ecu but i have no idea about the coils being interchangeable.

The motor i have is a blacktop but i was planning to use silvertop coil and edis module as a matched pair.....

Not real sure about coils being different, but from what I know the Edis is only on Auto mondeos. Manuals wont have it seperate, its mounted on the firewall. The megajolt is designed around the ford edis system so definitely yes. I reckon silvertop & blacktop coils will all be the same coils used, but this is just what i reckon.

I am sure it has a 3 pin connector.

Compatibility I am not sure on , should be. It is just a power, ground, and trigger.

Ah ha. That makes sense...Couldn't find the EDIS module at my local wreckers but it was a manual car...tool.

I've got the sump and mounts on the way but don't have a solution for the water rail or exhaust at the moment. Am toying with the idea of having a rail made locally; laser cut plate or plates to suit stock steel/stainless/aluminium profiles maybe get a few extra made to help with the cost. All the materials have pro's and con's but haven't decided which way to go at the moment.

TPS looks like it should be fairly easy to adapt from stock TB to carbs which is good

why dont you try to sus out a really small thermostat housing.

Good suggestion i'll have a look when i'm picking the edis module up from the wreckers; any idea on how much clearance there is to play with on a MK2 escort or if anyone has gone down this road before?
