I understood mine were brand new cams. Yes I used new double springs...The engine was built to meet the requirement of the most necessary changes without going nuts. So we did pistons, rods, cams (mild), new springs, oversize valves and that is about it. Next was to have extensive porting, but decided against it...Really after 2x N/A cossie builds my summary is as follows.
1. N/A sounds superb, really! It is old school and all that...Grins...
2. Turbo is berserk and I cannot be happier with the outcome from a stocker engine / decent accessories...
3. From what I see the guys who run serious N/A engines have done for a good/personal reason to either see what can be achieved as a challenge or for a particular category to race...If you want a nuts road/track car just peg a turbo engine in....If you want to spend money and develop a N/A engine then do so, but nothing is for free (well to most)
Good Luck...
