It's funny how things pan out for cars sometimes isn't it? I'm glad your RS is still in good hands.

Yeah agree about the stripes on the Aus midnight cars, silver just looks a bit awkward to my eyes, black, not much point really.

Its a lesson on how schemes can make or break the look of a car isnt it? Colours like yellow, white, black, red suit the Aus style down to the ground, the other colours like green, orange and midnight struggle a little with the larger stripes.

Well to begin with I am going to put all the ford and escort badges on the back, then im going to stand back and squint a little then decide where the rear RS2000 goes on - if at all ! As always I'm of the opinion that I can always add a decal later.

See and here is my view on the UK placement of rear RS2000 - it works well with the longer number plate, in fact, I think the whole back of the car looks better with the longer plate.

Also check this out - I know its a Facebook link but I found this super interesting

Absolutely. The mirrors are another case in point.
I was going to run with the standard black mirrors that the RS's came with however they were painted, by mistake, in body colour.
I wasn't convinced about keeping them until I offered up a spare black mirror I had. Looked bloody hideous. The difference was chalk and cheese to me, body colour all the way now.

Those badges made me smile Marty, I'd kill now for all of those badges we used to cut up or throw away.

I just went back and looked at the photos of your car again - 100% the yellow mirrors look better, especially with the black plastic mount, gives it the right amount of black to tie in perfectly with the other black areas of the car. If the whole mirror was black it would look odd.

Damit.... Now you got me on thinking with my mk1 escort mirrors, I bought Falcon xw gt motors which look like a deformed Ford mirror, was going to leave them black but am trying to reduce black add-ons. Won't do anything till doors and decals are on ..
Seen that link, swirl is the key for bhp after all other mods. D Visard shows this in his vids.
The badges are fglass of the originals I did from the 90s when they were everywhere, I still have a rusty Milo tin full of Escort/Capri/Cortina badges that were pocketed from wreckers back in those days.
RS and rally pack mostly had black badges but your car being almost black possibly have silver? Which ever colour I suppose the decals should match . If doing the satin back rear panel bit, it needs to be done right and watch a lot of The Professionals shows, mine was done wrong after a crash incident and I wasn't happy. In the end it's up to your taste and what you like, yours to appreciate and others to admire

sorry, but from that discussion, you guys are all guilty of being closet Anoraks
( perhaps we should help save the forum by seeing if CF anoraks can be made available in the shop :))

I had no idea there were UK and Aus versions of the RS stripes, all I ever saw was Aus also, and the 2L rally pack of course.
For my $2.00, 100% silver stripes with you all the way.
With those silver revolutions, it will look the ducks nuts, totally classy and a good balance of contrast.

Get assembling!
2 minutes of thinking is all you need, rip into it!
Sounds like we might have some more cars going by Xmas at this rate.

Well well aren't we all little anoraks .

There is nothing wrong with wanting a car to be period correct concourse, there is also nothing wrong with stuffing the car full of upgrades and painting it in zebra stripes

So the type 9 is done and buttoned up, sealed up, greased up and ready to rock!

Eagle eyes will notice the two back covers aren't on the trans yet, they're sitting there ready to go because I want to mate it to the engine, partially fill with oil and run it through the gears once the car is running before putting those on just in case something internal is not quite right and it needs to come apart again.

So for those interested in ever attempting this mod, the main reason in my mind for it is to save the center console and shifter position in a mk1 or mk2. The mod is possible to do with garage tools and a machine set up to weld aluminum, is it easy? No. Is it possible? Yes.

Marching on now its time to tackle the axle center, I am aiming on getting the suspension back in the car first and making it a roller. This is so the car can be shuffled about the garage as needed with relative ease and safety.

Ideally I want to ensure once a part goes in the car it doesn't come back out unless I really mess up, so the rear axle will be fitted to the car as a complete assembly, with calipers, brake lines and running gear all ready to rock.

First job was to tear it down and soak the crown and pinion in diesel for a few days then inspect.

There is some wear and tear but all in all I am happy to re-use these parts, there isn't any pitting / uneven wear and the diff was quiet when the car was parked. The spider gear center pin is however mobile, so that is junk. I wasn't reusing it anyway as the center will be getting a cheeky upgrade .

That gearbox looks like you wasn't even there doing any conversion mods, well done.

Diff gears are pretty stout, it's the UK after market ones that are soft, designed to wear and sell more.
Ok which LSD unit are you getting?
Seems everyone wants the 3j , it's fine for fast road, track as is all of them..
I'm going to hopefully get a Blackline LSD for my project, it works like a quaife but also cheaper , just my 9c worth.
Small history lesson is 3j used to fail when they was new on the scene 25-30yrs ago, they'd small the bearing carrier off the centre , they are totally fine now, just a company learning curve at the start, we had 4x failures with mild Pinto and 1 with Nos.

Please say you got tramp bars/brackets installed on the body , I forgot to look at pics before
