Last nite I made a small filler piece at the front of the arch to be welded in over the weekend

The turret pieces lined up ready to be traced and to be cut out

The outer tub piece welded and sealed with Sika 227



Once that was welded in place I moved on to the tank well

Here's my attempt at making the part, it's not going to be an exact copy but as long as it's close and does the job I'll be happy... Yes I could have bought this part but doing that doesn't improve the skills in metal shaping .

I did make it in 1 piece but my tape measure got the wrong measurements so I cut it down the length so I can adjust it's width before fully welding it in place.

On a side note with this build, if you remember I asked about the roof whether to swap it with another skin or go the sunroof... Well I'm going to sunroof it cause the next project coming up is a van to be converted to a ute, needing the low roof of a sedan .

Today I fitted the fuel tank just to make sure the panel I made is going to be correct as possible without being a problem later when it gets reassembled

And this is the tank support plate from the old panel, it's still quite solid apart from the side which will get new metal and a sandblasting before installing

I've been test fitting the back panel to check gaps etc during the rear side panels reconstruction to make sure nothing's out of place . I'll keep working on this thru the week

Still working on the tank panel bit by bit , joining the return angle piece back on

Check that the restored support plate lines up as intended

Rivnuts are sometimes an excellent investment, when I had the tank Insitu I noticed the weldnut had gone so out came the rivnut device to rectify the situation , I'll prolly use them more in some areas that's not a load bearing point

We happened to be in Tassie a few years ago when the Targa was going through some of the stages (great planning on my part). Even when they were only doing the recce, it was good to see behind the scenes.
We leapfrogged them during the day, then got to the hotel and the carpark was full of pit cars and crew.
If you find a wrecked roof vent by the side of the road I'll bags it.
 
Nice to see a few patches of cream panels in your photos, its as close as i'd get to being an organ donor (no good bits left worth donating)...
PS .I'm keeping quiet on mine for a while to give everyone a break from seeing photos of arches, but there is good progress underway.

Marty how good is the adl rally, even better when it was paired with the motorsport festival. Unfortunately im on night shift this weekend and have family duties this sunday so going to miss out.

The sound of the Ferrari FXX coming down Gouger street is forever etched in my mind, best sounding car ive ever heard.

Hey Robbie, yeah the sights n sounds of these supercars was something to remember, just hearing them changing gears and crackling off into the distance of the hillside, really gets the hairs up on the back neck.
Watching the rally gave me a lift in enthusiasm, as was seeing my orange Mex being the sweep car , now owned by taff.

I placed the back panel on to see where things might need tweaking, obviously it will because I've totally reshaped the lower back quarters, funny enough only 1 side was out by 15mm which was easy fixt


Still working on the tank panel and reckon I've got it right now so decided to weld it in home along with the thin filler piece


Fitment is pretty good here now, the tank fits in there and is a little tight, as normal for these tanks
All sealed with Sika

There's still some patches to connect up to totally seal the arches , this might get done thru the week.
Next on the car will be the turrets and the rear windscreen vent scuttle panel..

Yes Deano, I sold it to him minus the engine, box, exhaust and ECU. Most of the panels are fibreglass and most of the interior parts. If I can build this one as good I'll be happy !!

Doing a little more to the coup this rvo, I stripped all the filler and paint off the rear panel to show the join if two panels to make one. One side is from the original 72 model and the other is a 75 with the number plate raised boss. I also removed the striker post so I can clean up the mess on the inside, the cut outs are cause the metal there was so frail it's best to let in new pieces


Here's the welded joint, I'll try to smooth it out at best as possible

Got working on the turrets this weekend as well as done small patches about the place.
I done a set of pics as I done the turrets, first thing I done was to remove the rear firewall panel, this took a little while cause I was thinking of reinstalling it so tried to preserve it.. this gains access and lessens the guess work trimming and more trimming

Cutting the inner tub piece out to see if the turret will fit in the gap nice n snug.

Next is too attack the bump stop box that's spot welded on, once it's off, trim the return lip at the chassis cause that's where the turret will be welded to.

Because the turrets are mass production parts they don't care for easy installation, the return edge did not line up well so some hammer action was needed to adjust the tub without being to excessive..

I ended up cutting the return lip off and welding it on again to fit better to the tub
These are the small things needed to do for a decent fitment..
