Yep, the stick forward is common Mk2 Escort (1600 and 2 litre - not sure about 1300).
You'll notice that when a type 9 (5 speed) is put in a Mk2 (type 9 always has stick back just like the "E"), the hole in the tunnel has to be moved back to accommodate. Not made for a mk2 (or any Escort) shell.
Is it basically a "type E" with a different extension housing? I think so, as I've also bought the version with the stick back (out of a TC cortina) and had to swap the extension housing and shifter rod for the Escort version, but it all worked fine in the Escort.
Got this from Wiki - It seems to say that a "type 9" is a 5 speed "type E", and I've confirmed for myself that a Mk2 Escort box is basically a 4 speed "type 9"....
"
What is a Ford Type 9 gearbox? The Type 9 was Ford's first five-speed, rear-wheel-drive gearbox, and it is based on the four-speed Type E gearbox. The fifth, or overdrive gear, was added to the four-speed gearbox by placing it in the extension housing or tailshaft housing."
