any way of hooking up regenerative braking Spud to put some juice back in the batteries?

I'm curious why you're not going direct drive Spud (added weight and losses through the gearbox and all).

I brought all of the gear for basically nothing - the gearbox had already been coupled to the motor
So the path of least resistance with this one. After I reg it I may refine - see how it goes

cleaned up underneath - as much as i could be bothered. Put it back on its feet, paint the engine bay and then fit off the motor (again), the controller, inverter etc. 
Then ill buy the batteries (15k odd worth) - yeese! (its disappointing that the most realistic choice in batteries boils down to either one Chinese brand or another)
