There is a difference in ID number placement between ’69-‘70 Capris and '71-'72 Capris.

1969-70
These cars have a similar dual numbering system to XW Falcons. A numbers matching car from 1970 would have:
- the engine number stamped on the drivers side shock tower and the same number stamped on the engine. For V6's: a JE number (manual transmission) or JF number (automatic transmission);
- the chassis number (CK number) stamped on the slam panel (rearwards of the bonnet lock mechanism);
- both numbers would appear on the compliance plate.

1971-72
From 1971 onwards, the same number (CK number) is stamped on the:
- drivers side shock tower in the engine bay
- compliance plate
- engine

Note: Engine numbers are stamped directly behind the drivers side cylinder head.

The same 1970 cars logic goes for a 1969 versions of the Capri.

The trouble is of course, with all Capri's, Escort's, Cortina's, etc., being built back in that era, usually engines were just replaced by another, from Repco or similar, and so the 'matching' numbers idea is then lost, forever!

Yep, it wasn't something people worried about back then. I replaced a few engines in Holdens I had with Repco replacements.

The matching numbers idea still remains though, just some cars no longer have it.

I am only concerned about number matching cars for monetary value as people seem to value them higher. From an ownership point of view it really makes no difference to the car and how it drives. Im really happy with my non numbers matching Perana as it still has Basil Green motor stamp and cost far less than one which has perfect numbers. It makes no sense to me to insist on a number matching car and spend thousands to recondition a car that has the owner insist its a numbers matching car.
The car will drive the same with a different stamp on the engine block and the Ford detail doesn't extend to any other part of the drive line. Also the fact that I could buy a car that has never been worked on in 40+ years doesn't excite me. I like a car thats been well cared for and is rust free (or close too) While I do have number matching cars the engine number and chassis number are only of concern
 1. It was Stolen
2. It was rebadged
I do like purists wasting money but for me a V6 Capri is a V6 Capri you can't fake the fact that its  not overally a high powered motor its a beautiful car at the top of the spec here in Oz and what makes it special is really up to each owner and their love for it. Money can buy anything but who at the end of the day wants someone to shove their head down the back end of the car to prove a point.
As long as the car drives to give joy numbers mean absolutely nothing, Cost does according to my better half anyway.

The reason for this thread was to explain what makes a numbers matching car, not how important it is to various people.

I agree that matching numbers doesn't add to driving enjoyment, but again, this thread isn't about that.

Well sorry but as the post states numbers matching is numbers matching that really isn't a question that needs answering. If the I'd plate doesn't match the engine number then it's not a numbers matching original car. Their fore I assumed you were asking about its importance.

I agree with both arguments. Even tho my GTV6 DELETE is 100% Matching numbers , it was offered to me at a
price that even Scrooge McDuck would've grabbed with both hands, and I just lucked in that it was 100% un-molested plus matching numbers plus low mileage plus minimal next to no rust.
I would still have purchased it if it was at the opposite end of the scale as a basket case.
I have ALWAYS purchased my cars with an investment hat on. They will be sold one day even if it's after you die.
So why not buy the best value for money possible so you or the kids get a better return and even turn a profit ?
This is the mantra of the Capitalist for which I won't apologize for.

Bernie, your GTV6 is NOT a DELETE option Capri, it is one of the identified 11 Capri 'Specials' that Ford Australia fitted with the 'D' port motor, etc, etc. It's got nothing to do with a 'Delete' options Capri, nothing!
