Was in a mates MGB yesterday and watching those Smiths gauges work is very nostalgic. Pity Ford didn't really go that way.

Not sure either, the old gauges in this one were Smiths but were mechanical for the previous 4age engine so hence I went back to the correct electric ones for the original engine.
 
Day one of the dash install today.
The wiring loom was far too butchered and I had a nice original GT loom in the garage so the decision was made to swap it out. It wasn't labelled though I taped the wiring diagram to the windscreen and started tracing wires.
 
Bit more messing around, started with the gauges but I couldn't get the radio in with them in the way so pulled it apart and refitted them both. Then the heater controls wouldn't go in the the radio in the way. Lol pulled it apart all over again.
 
Anyway here it is at end of work today.

 
All of that time spent searching for an original radio suddenly seemed insignificant. I think it really finishes off the dash and I can't wait to listen to the local golden oldies station, crackles and all on cruises.
 
 

Stunning Drew ! ...  well done ! ........  "that radio is a Bobby Dazzler!"  .......  but I reckon it'll be easier to drive with a column and wheel ! (lol)!
 
I'm in the middle of doing my Capri Dash replacement and it's no "walk in the park" for sure, as you'd expect when you dont do this sort of work every week.
Very time consuming as you "go in" thinking I'm just replacing the cracked Dash and Pod Surround, and before you know it, you've ripped out everything thinking "while I'm at it" I may as well do all the other things staring at me !!!
 
Does anyone know if "Carbon Tetrachloride" spray is still the best product to squirt into radio Volume pot to eliminate "crackle" you get whilst adjusting the volume ?

It's been many months since I've checked in on the forum, and it was great to start again by reading how your project has advanced - I can't wait to see it in person!

Carbon Tetrachloride is a cleaner. I would be asking an old time instrument repairer.

Drew that dash with the old radio looks phenomenal! Don't start getting into a discussion with anyone re electric v's mechanical gauges, its a bit like religion.
Also may I ask the question, are you even going to be able to hear the radio when the engine is going?

It should be ok Escfalcap, I've got a modern speaker to go in there and it'll have all of its mufflers, I'm a bit over noisy cars as cruisers nowadays.

Steering column went back in today along with the steering gear, it'll be much easier to push around the garage now. I've got a spare wheel to use whilst I'm doing the grubby stuff.
Also got the brake calipers back on whilst I had the wheels off and was under there.
 
The windscreen seal was nice and soft after sitting in the sun on the driveway for a while I thought I'd have a go at fitting the chrome garnish the the wipers. An hour later it was in with my thumb bruised and bleeding from levering at it.

 
Happy with the weekends progress.
 
 

So nice to see all the original decor and fittings resurrected to their former splendor without spoiling the status quo by "gilding the lily".

Drew, That indicator stalk looks like mk1 Capri?
And JR if you read this, I did fix my stalk. One of the contact points did not have continuity with the metal strip it was riveted to so I cleaned it up and bridged it with some solder. A few other minor repairs and all good, I now have headlights!

Could be similar to the Capri stalk, I can send some photos of it and the plug if it helps. The Mk1 Cortina people use one from a landrover its meant to be a direct swap, maybe useful for the Capri's also. They're meant to be cheap and readily available, mine seems ok so didn't bother looking any further into it.

Yes Drew, John put me onto them the other day and I will probably get one as a spare (isn't that what we do) as mine works, but it wouldn't surprise me if it suddenly dies.
Thanks for the offer of pics but probably not much use comparing the Corti stalk as its older than the Capri!
