A rubber dust seal between the piston and the body, most AP racing calipers dont have them, some do. The CP5040 do not the cp5100 do.

depending on states regs they are required to be legal hence why im going leaning that way. If your car is more motosport based i wouldnt worry.

wow, some nice handiwork there.
And here was me chasing down manky 50+ year old cast iron hubs to reuse...
It would be interesting to know pricing.
Burtons suggest they dont sell cheap chinese items, but who knows.

Do the wheel studs have to get helicoiled in normally ? Just for road ones i mean.

Yep Robbie, thanks for bringing it to my attention regarding the dust seals. With the cars I've had engineered over the years I had never come across this. All caliper units have been built here and have ADR compliance so I suppose they do have the dust seals? and yes, thankfully for this project it doesn't matter.

Crikeys Deano you just threw me into a tizz. In steel hubs they just press into the hub on the spline and the bolt head stops the stud pulling through. Looks like the alloy version is similar but uses a retaining nut on the back as there is no 'head' on the stub as per;  https://www.burtonpower.com/gp4-wheel-stud-retaining-nut-mp331.html

I am curious about the purpose of the flat section on the stud (on the wheel side). Is this to hold the stud to tighten up this retaining nut?

Those a grp4 studs as used on the cars back in the day or in rally. You can get alloy hubs but with just normal wheel studs that go in as per normal. That’s what I have

Guys, Does anyone know if there is someone punching out the front hub 'special' washer for the Escort/Capris?
That little tab breaks off
They appear to be available as a kit (washer, nut & cage) from the UK.

Mark, I dont know about who'd do the special washer, apart from the standard answer/question:
have you tried yesterford? I'm sure Mike would have them or know where.

I'd never picked up you could get nutted studs for the alloy hubs before. I'd be finer (r?) with that, than perhaps what i'd imagined the case was using the alloy hub with the suds just screwed in somehow. I found it hard to track down the OEM steel hubs for the Capri, and actually Mike put me off the concept of the alloy ones at the time, but thats nearly all you can find these days. Plus Burtons, GP 4 etc all seem to sell them everywhere of course.

My escort van needs longer studs to cope with the proposed alloys, and at least one stud has the knurled hole ovaled, which I did not find out until trying to do the upgrade. So i'll be going down some form of this path shortly.

And also, its surprisingly hard (bordering on impossible) to press in a stud with the next size up collar diameter (14.1-14.3mm? maybe from memory), and I'm guessing you cant just redrill the holes out to go up a size (and lose the locking knurl in the process)?

Thanks for that Deano, will try Mike.
As for the stud. I would rather be doing what you are trying in a steel hub than an alloy specimen.
A good engineering shop should be able to sort the hole diameter compatibility if replacement steel hubs are not available?

Robbie, I have have spoken with Scott and funnily enough he was looking at having some 5 stud (114.3 PCD) alloy hubs made for himself. He is investigating this now with the guy who does his machining. The AP rotors (305mm) can be machined to accept the hub so will keep you posted.

Not sure how many people go to a Ford 5 stud pattern on their small Fords? I do it because of the greater (off the shelf) wheel choices and clearing of rotor/calipers and I think it makes sense if your doing diff conversions on already 5 stud units etc

Told you scott would be a good resource. Id imagine if you can get a blank hub you could put in any pcd on the front and rear youd like.

114.3 opens up alot of options with japanese wheels to which can be some really cool 3 piece wheels etc, before i got my simmons i thought i might change up to get access to jap wheels.

Early Hilux is falcon 5 stud too, then your able to buy 4x4 wheels proper cheap and with a mad offset.

need arches for all the good offsets tho!
