Awesome thanks very much that gives me a clear direction.
We have decided not to paint the blackouts in satin black after buying 4lts !!! because we are doing clear over base 2 pack we will clear the blackouts so we dont have the paint ridge & makes it easier to polish the car in years to come not having to be carefull with the satin black.

Hi Matt, yes rebuilding gearbox parts and engine machining are just two items that come to mind that are way out of my league.
My plan at the outset for this rebuild was to do as much work as was possible, to keep costs down, learn new skills, and to just enjoy the journey of the build not worry too much about how long it took.
Im very happy with the end result and I certainly have learen't heaps so far.
I never set out to build a concourse car for the very reason that too much would have to be farmed out to proffessionals to do.
Also because all along Ive had in mind to rebuild two other cars in my possession (mk1 escort and 66mk1 cortina gt lhd two door.), I knew that unless I did it all myself then I would never afford it.
Looking forward to getting started on the corty and it is amazing how many of the teens/ young adults that see it immediatly fall in love with it.

Today I fitted some fully recoed m/p16 calipers and bled the brakes. This will do to get it regoed and then will come some real front brakes. (no not oversize heavy falcon brakes)

Next is a few oil leaks. The bolts that hold the side plate on the gearbox all have to be sealed as they go straight into the box. The other interesting leak is oil dripping from the front universal joint. Its definitly not coming thru the rear gearbox seal so what gives here?
Also the diff front seal I replaced but its still leaking. The shaft that goes thru the seal is in good nick. Could the oil be getting around the seal somehow?
Engine is fine no leaks.

The leak from the front uni could be the plug in the back of the yoke. its a pain to get to as the yoke needs to be removed from the tailshaft. ive had the same problem before and i spent ages trying to find it. the diff flange could be slightly worn, and the seal might not have enough pressure on it. you could buy thin sleeves that fit over the flange to help it seal. hope this helps. I didn't realize there was a plug in the back of the yoke, that will be it , thanks Owen.
The diff pinion seal there is only three ways that oil can get past, down the splines, between the seal and yoke or behind the seal. Its not coming out at the nut so splines are good. Im pretty confident that seal to yoke is good so that leaves behind the seal. The manual does say to put sealant around outside of seal before installing. So plenty to do under the car yet.

I drained the oil from the gearbox then sealed the bolts that fix the sideplate on then pulled the front yoke from the tailshaft and sure enough the filler at the end had a crack in it, so dug it out and replaced with metal mend. The leak from the front of the diff, I used the rattle gun to loosen the nut and removed the flange. When I assembled it the first time i had damaged the seal with the obvious results. New seal in courtesy of JR and all should be good. Whew! Hopefully no more oil leaks.
