Only a few hundredths shaved off unfortunately, with a PB of 16.22 (last was 16.25)
Three runs, with the first two not really worth counting because the float level wasn't set right and the fuel bowl ran dry half way down the track! So I adjusted the float level and ran one more which was the PB.

The only advantage I can see of having a 38 is the instant throttle response. Wide open throttle it pulls only a fraction more than the 32/36 but the 32/36 is much friendlier in traffic and uses less fuel. (I'm not concerned about fuel economy but just making a point about the differences)

I've concluded that the head on my engine just has no more flow in it. I think the 38 will respond better with bigger inlet valves & some porting. So that must be the next logical step right  ??

Revised gearbox crossmember which can accommodate both 4 and 5 speed ford boxes by simply removing the 1" box steel and shifting the mount forwards or backwards.
89mm holesaw and new carpet on the way.

Progress has been a bit slow out in the shed. I've heard many people say putting in a 5 speed is time consuming, but it's for all the reasons I wasn't expecting. Like carpet, redoing my seat mounts and prepping/ repainting the floor.

The welder was a much needed tool and so far it's going alright. I'm using gasless wire which welds hotter than using argon, so I've only done spot welds. Sika11FC under the tunnel and on the inside edge of the gaiter holder to keep all water out.
The shifter hole was something I researched a bit before tackling, which I think paid off. Doing it this way is tidy & reversible, if you keep the cutting.

And this magic hose armour to protect brake booster hose that runs behind the block

They certainly are some very neat modifications, plenty of thought has gone into them.

I'm about to do the same tunnel mods to a MK2, seeing this has been a great help.

Thanks Bacca. I used rolled steel ( panel steel) for the jobs, I think that's also played a part in the result. Good luck :)

Some CSA Globes on the escort now, they're 13 x 6 with 23P offset and 205 60 13 tyres. No guard rub.
The wheels came with tyres but I'm not sure I like such wide tyres. 175/70/13 might look a bit better. Otherwise 185/65/13 but they're a very unusual size so hard to get at a good price. Thoughts??

Looking good mate, I think you are right about the smaller tyres.  I went 175 60 and I really like how it sits.

Thanks Matt. I might just keep the Globes/205's for track days and put the ratty old steels back on. I have a soft spot for them for some reason.

After a test run this afternoon, alloys will be staying :) They're 2kg lighter per wheel (compared to steel wheels) which offsets the weight added by my new gearbox. It's also become apparent that the car needs a quick rack

185/60/13 tyres are easily had. Good size for 6j.
Car is looking great!
