Gauge wiring question

Hello Guys
I am swapping gauges in the Capri the rev counter on the original doesn't work properly the auto electrician claims my spare is the same the replacement has a white wire on the back which just goes through a nylon clamp type thing , there is a wire from the spade connector next to it that disappears into the engine bay presumably for the connection to the coil.
Question is what is the white wire for and what do I connect it to.

this one is suppose to work

Ill take a stab at this.
The white wire goes from the ignition switch to that tab on the right (as looking at the pic). When ignition is turned  to "on" this supplies 12 volts to run the tach electrics. Then the white wire continues from this tab and connects to one end of the white loop wire in the pic. This in turn is connected to a pink resistor wire that runs across the dash and to the left side bulkhead to engine bay connector plug. From there it joins to a white/yellow wire that is connected to the starter solenoid. From the same connection on the solenoid it then runs up to the + side of the coil.
The pink wire is a length of resistor wire so that the 12 volts at the tach is reduced to 6-8 volts to power the coil.
The white wire loops thru the pulse sensor at the rear of the tach which can read the impulses from the coil and decide how many revs the engine is doing.

Sorry that explanation is for a v6. The kent engine will have the coil on the right side and might not have the starter solenoid but the principle will be the same.

Thanks for the reply ronsmallford I don't fully understand as I am not that good on the electricals but if the clamp is a pulse detector it may mean that the first thing to be replaced may be the auto electrician as this would mean this is wired complectly wrong. Looks like more investigation is needed. The car was originally a 1600 poverty pack I have put in the GT dash and had a local auto electrician wire it up.

Hello ronssmall fords i hate to bring back the dead if one was to try and bench test one of these tachos how would he do so?

If said person has hooked 12v + directly to the sensing circuit is there likely damage?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Blake, look at the first pic in this post and note the white wire going thru a clamp on the back of the tacho. This is not a 12v connection what it does is sense a pulse from the coil.
To just test whether the tach is working connect a wire from the 12v plus on the coil to one end of this white wire. Connect the other end of this white wire to the spade terminal on the right, then connect this to the positive battery terminal. Then earth the metal body of the gauge to the car or connect to battery minus terminal.
Finaly start your engine it should be working.
Note this is not a permanent setup as it doesnt allow for 9v running of coil.
Diaclaimer (the usual stuff), ...cheers., ron.
