MK2 Escort ignition problem

Hi all,
Hoping someone here has had the same problem or can offer some advice? I have a 79 ford escort mk2 1600 which I very recently purchased.
The problem i am having is as follows, When i turn the key to the starter motor run position the car fires and if i hold this key position the car will continue to run.
If i release the key to the ignition position the car stops with no spark. There is no power at the coil when in ignition key position.Could it be the resiter wire circuit could have a fault?
I seem to get power from the back of the ignition barrel.I tried to hotwire the car by a wire from the positive battery terminal to the positive on the coil but melted the wire when i tried to start, when i put 12v to the negative on the coil the starter motor turns over but does not engage.
There is only one wire off the positive side of the coil which goes to the points.
There is also only one wire off the negative which runs into the harness.
The car was running then just decided to do this.
The car does have an alarm system but the only kill circuit i can find with it is on the starter motor circuit.

Thankyou for any suggestions
Mick

Ok i fixed it for now, found a ballast resistor in the backroom of the local auto shop and run a new circuit off the ignition switch.
