Steering Coupling Failure?

Has anyone else out there experianced a failure of a Nolathane steering coupling?

I have the slim coupling type, Which I replaced recently, I did'nt get around to finishing a heat sheild as per Nolathane recommendations, Probably drove the car around 10km before it ripped in half. maybe I overtightened the bolts or heat from the extractors possibly affected the Nolathane? (My Capri runs a 302W V8)

Anyways. I was lucky to not have a accident, I managed to creep home with hardly steering at all after a little run around the back streets near home.

And I have just completed the "Mongrel" job of replacing yet another Nolathane coupling, I will have to see how long this one lasts-But I'm not driving the car until heat sheild goes around to prevent heat damage to the Nolathane.

Any other people using something different-factory type or another aftermarket brand such as Noltec.

by the look of it .... you definately NEED the heat shield, heat is causing the "nolathane" to harden, then fracture

There are about 4 different linkages, each puts the coupling in a different place you need to get hold of one which keeps the coupling away from your down pipe. There is also a much thicker one available

    Hi,

Yes i had the same problem with mine, it just perished.
I noticed it through the streeting when reversing out of shed.
Ive use heavy duty conveyor belt with fibre in it like the orignal.

Hasnt let me down yet going for few years.
Can take pic if you like.
    Im running a 302

Really, I thought there were only 2.

I suppose that would work, the original last some time, really just a reinforced rubber belt material. If you could post a pic, I'd be most intrested.

As I mentioned, I'm not driving until that heat sheild is fabricated, I'm planning on useing that ACL heat sheild material, alot of guy's swear by it, & Even used in car manuafacturing ala Ford BARRA Turbo exhaust manifold sheild.

I actually replaced the uni joint extention that connects steering coloum, because it became seized-locked up, could not lubricate to loosen it and did the 1st Nolathane coupling which failed at the same time.

I have never been that happy with my Capri with the front steering, I know most will say what do you expect with a big heavy lump V8 sitting there, And I have replaced steering rack with a reco unit, rack bushes-Nolathane, lower control arms, K-mac adjustable strut tops, stuts & springs are ok, front tyres 195.55.15.
It's the only Capri I have driven, I have owned other small Fords, MK2 Escort & 6cylinder & V8 TE Cortina's, they were great, in comparison to my Capri. Or maybe I'm getting "Soft" driving 2010 model cars every day.[:x)]

Ive had a nolathane steering bush perish but not cause loss of steering, my steering wheel had 1/4turn play which for my Escortaint right, with new balljoints, rubber bushes and rebuilt q/rack i knew i'd missed something...lucky i kept the fail safe loop on the coupling which Escorts have...... i promptly bought a grp4 coupling, sorted !

Got mail that the UK sourced Vauxhall Viva (like HB Torana) have a metal and rubber coupling of the same stud pattern. I think I found one at Spares Galore so I'll pop up and compare it
