Purple People Eater - Turbocharged Project

See, this is what happens when a couple of guys sit around one afternoon discussing what car parts they have in the collective bin.

The original idea started over a year ago, a spare parts car, a spare good 2L, a spare turbo from a GSR Lancer and an itch to play around with fuel injection.

Although as it sometimes happens the time and patience didn't really front up and so the idea stayed dead in the water (not after I had started to amass various parts I might add, megasquirt, intercooler, surge tank). Now I've decided that since the car has been on my driveway for almost two years it is now mine and that the only otherthing I didn't have from the original list was the turbo, I'm going to finish this beast as a an all too welcome distraction from a really busy schedule of uni and work.

So I've finally got my "round toit" (thanks Ben)

Spent this week chopping out unneeded bits like the battery tray and rad support upright and then did a truly fantastic job of painting the engine bay, with a pressure pack and not a whole lot of prep-work ... watch out Rhys!

Got the suspension in yesterday which is a mix from my previous three cars... struts from my green granny banger, brakes and swaybars from the RS and a mix and match of bushes and ball joints choosing the best of everything I had.

I appologise for the poor quality of the photos but I wanted to get a few before I got too stuck in and had no "Before" pics at all... as you can probably tell I'm not going to be too concerned with asthetics on this one

Car Will be:

2L injected and turbocharged Mk1 4-door
-Megasquirt Computer
-Custom Exhaust Manifold
-Falcon six-cyl inlet manifold cut down with an adaptor to fit the pinto
-Motor for the moment will be fairly standard just freshened up, new bearings, pistons etc. If it all goes to plan I'll build a better bottom end further down the track
-Will be used for hill-climbs and super sprints so I've got a harness and tracking down a seat now

I'll keep you posted as it progresses

Alastair

Looks like it will be an interesting project.

Have you still got the Cortina ? I remember you were selling up the engine some time ago.

Looking good man. Interested in seeing how you rigged up your inlet manifold. I had a look at my AU falcon six inlet manifold and it looked a little tricky to cut down.. You may have the EA-EB type..

she should be a little screamer..

Cortina is still there... it's got to be one of those projects that I now just want to leave until I have the means to rebuild properly. Has progressed though, got a GT dashtop and gauges for it and made a start on the rust. The escort I'm just throwing together to have a bit of fun, you never know the motor from this may end up in the cortina.

The inlet manifold I'm still keeping my fingers crossed on. It is the EA-EB type with the plenum underneath. From what I've measured up and played around with so far, it should just fit snugly including the 20mm adapter it'll need.

Hillclimbs are the main target for this, as well mallala super sprints... but may include a little bit of hills bashing til it gets defected

Well the rain has set in so I finally got sorted out and cleared some room in my shed so we could push the project up there. Now I have a roof over it (and a heater :), I'm so soft) I've pretty much been out there every night doing this that and the other.

The bottom end is finally going back together. Got the pistons and rods back the other day, and have now stripped down the head to clean it up and replace what is needed. Found that the head that was originally from my RS was pretty much shagged, valves are like a hotdog down a hallway and the seats are hacked up, but the "spare" that i got from Rhys is pretty good and has new guides and good seats so I will now use that with the good cam and followers from my head.

My friends have now started taking bets (literally, there's a pool going, ranging from 25minutes up to a huge 2 weeks [}:)]) on how long this motor will last in the hands of my mate benny and I [88]. To give you an idea of how confident I am, the next bottom end has already started being planned and parts being sourced

Here's some pics of it's new home and various bits happening...

These were the wheels that came on my cortina (to the left), lovely widened steelies... I think with better sized tyres that they may actually fin in there alright, at least well enough for keeping slicks on ... might even try and get some slloys with the same offset

Started cleaning up the interior a bit as well, pulled the cluster out to repaint the surround etc... still have it's share of HJs trash though

yep, dizzy will still be there... actually started checking clearances of this yesterday, the manifold comes out far enough that it will will clear the dizzy quite easily (will get some photos to illustrate). The part that will be the closest will actually be the number one cylinder inlet runner but it should still just squeeze past. Might also make fitting the oil filter tight but this is the least of my worries at the moment... I'm still not sure about the cross member and inner wing but again SHOULD be ok ... I'll have to wait til the motor is back in the car to be sure though of course

Megasquirt is DONE!!... two days of soldering and a serious amount of mucking about with my laptop and I've finally got it all finished. Really can't wait to get it in the car now, spent all day today fiddling with the stimulator knobs (hmm that sounds a bit dodgy) and can't wait to get it set up.

Also have to send out a massive thank you to blackrs2k (Jase) who welded the oil return onto my sump for me... cheers mate ... did and awesome job too, so now the bottom end can finally be put into the car

Will take a bunch of pics as soon as I can

Been getting a bit done on the little beastie.

Started mounting up the fuel pumps etc in the boot and working out the plumbing for that

Got the Datsun Master Cylinder in and the re-shaped the brake lines to suit.

Motor is pretty much ready to go back in, just nee to wait til I get things like the timing belt before I do that. Might wait til the crank angle sensor wheel comes back from the laser cutting place though so I don't need to muck around doing that while it's in the car.

Tacho is now mounted in the dash as well (I got bored while waiting to go to uni one morning and ended up missing my first lecture because I got engrossed in what I was doing). Fits in there quite well, after I had done a bit of modifying with the trusty dremel ... don't know how I ever lived without that thing

Now I have to start tidying up the boot and get the motor back in so that I can finish off the manifolds and start wiring it up

I've had to stop thinking about how much money I'm going to end up spending on this thing, but it's safe to say that my original estimates were WAY off [:I] and if you're planning on doing a turbo setup with EFI I'd be putting aside at least 5-6k and you MAY see a little change... can't blame anyone but myself though as I've changed the planned a lot to do everything the "proper" way instead of the original cheap way, oh well, at least it will be done right... to a point [:o)]

Not much has been done because of exams next week, but I did manage to take a little break and go pick these up...

made from 6mm steel, 36-1 teeth... also got some spacers made to put between the wheel and the pulley.

Heavily inspired by Andrew's that he made (read: I pinched his idea [:I]) but I'm not that clever so I drew up what I wanted and got them computer cut. (sorry about the crappy picture but I only had my phone)
