The definitive Pinto camshaft specs spreadsheet
Fellow Pinto sufferers; Here's the result of a couple of evenings work. The aim is to list the specifications of all known Pinto camshafts in as much detail as possible. Feel free to add extra manufacturers and/or missing / incorrect specs and send it to me and I'll update the original. A few points: 1) Isky Cams website isn't working. so they aren't included. Now included 2) Comp Cams seem to do a huge range but they don't clarify 2.0 vs/ 2.3 engines so I've left them out. Now included, but the first 5 on the list have hydraulic lifters - these may be 2.3L versions? Can anyone clarify? 3) Rocker ratio varies a lot from 1.5 - 1.6x. I have quoted manufacturers listed specs, but be aware that total valve lift is dependent on ratio used. 4) Check the lobe centres out in more detail for a particular cam. I have calculated most of them, but some contradict manufacturers stated lobe centres. I *might* sort this out into an extra column. My calculations assume symmetrical profiles. Catcams seem to state lobe centres waaaay different to those I calculated so I put in their values. 5) This has been thrown together so there are probably errors and improvements to be made. 6) I'll try and PDF this at some stage.(Update to v2 15/03/09); added some more Burtons, Coltec and std Ford. (Update to v3 23/06/09); added Isky, and Comp Cams. (Update to v4 28/05/10); added Kelford, TGmotor, ENEM, some old Heatseeker and the Sig Erson 134 grind from the Vizard book. Fixed a few glaring errors in older versions. Made a PDF of this for those without Excel but its too large to upload. Email me if you want it. Interesting that the Sig Erson 134 is quite different from the Piper and Burton 134 grinds, but quite similar to the Swedish TG23 and the Newman PH4. Well done that will come in handy for a reference.
Just a guick note regarding the Wade grinds. The specifications for the 520 and 520x are WRONG on Wades website and have been for ages. They seem to be arrogant to the fact, but they are definately not right. Clive that use to run the show will confirm it (he now runs Clive Cams).

Thanks Fellers
Wasn't that much work really. Happy for it to go into the tech ref section, but perhaps after a couple of weeks once I've re-checked everything and if anyone has any edits or other manufacturers to add. Wozzah do you have any info on Clive Cams grinds? ... no website... and the Wade correct specs?
I'm going to try and create a snazzy point chart of duration vs. lift once I work out how to use this stupid latest version of Excel properly.

Hi Guys. I have had a search through the guide and on the web. Trying to find the specs on a cam I have. The markings on the back are V K and 270M2, does anyone have any clues?

Ah so thats you selling that one on ebay. As you've probably already found out, 270M2 just gives you thousands of real estate results on floor area!
Presumably 270 refers to the duration, so the next thing you could do is measure the base circle diameter and the total lobe height, the difference multiplied by 1.6 will give total valve lift. If its around 0.46" then that fits with the Schneider and/or Piper 270 degrees duration cams. Also if you have a dial gauge and a degree wheel and a spare head to play around with you can get fairly close to the timings too.
Interested to find out more about your cam, so let me know what you work out and I'll post it on the list.

Sounds like a very mild grind, a small step up from standard. Prob worth ~ 5hp over standard.

Hi Guys, In all the fuss about camshafts, you have left out the 2 which started it all..... Boreham Works WR30 and Boreham Works WR40. I don't have any details to hand right now on the WR30 but it used to rev out something chronic and didn't give too much torque. The WR40 on the other hand was good for 200+HP when fitted to a good head with works valves, twin 48's and a set of TRW 12.5:1 fly cut pistons down below on a fully counterweighted Datsun Sports 2000 crank with NGK AP8FS plugs. Also made by Wade Cams and known as their 586 grind. I can just make out the writing on the grind card written by Clive many years ago.... Blank billet, Grind No.586 Running Clearance Exhaust .010 Inlet .008 Exhaust Opens 84 Closes 47 Inlet Opens 50? Closes 97 Hope I have been of some help.... Lift at Lobe 290
