Escort Mk2 possible fuel pump issue
Hi Guys, I am at the fun point of trying to start my Ford Escort Mk2 2 litre Pinto :) I tried to start her up for the first time the other day, i did the trick of putting fuel down the carby and this made her start until the fuel burnt off, then tried this a few time and it appears that fuel is not getting from the fuel tank to the carby as i could not see any fuel in the fuel filter. I have checked the fuel sender and the fuel line and all appears to be ok. I have currently taken out the fuel pump and taken it apart to see if all is ok, so far it seems to be fine but i cleaned it up. Was wondering if there is any sure way to check that the fuel pump is functional and if it could be anything else? I have never had this car running as i bought it with a fresh engine with 0km's. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Regards, Yan_83

Firstly, welcome to the site. Just disconnect the fuel hose that goes from the pump to the carby at the carby end. Have a mate crank the car over and see if petrol comes out of the hose. Be very careful though and make sure you use a bucket or something so you don't spill the petrol on the engine or set it alight. This will tell you where the problem lies. I.e. if petrol comes out it will be the carby set up. Good luck Matt

As far as I can see this will only be one of 2 things since you say there is no fuel in the filter it will either be a blocked line or a stuffed pump. Maybe try blowing down the fuel line and see if you can hear bubbling etc in the tank. I had this problem in my Mk 1 Capri, turned out to be a stuffed pump (probably most likely scenario)

Hey guys, Thanks for the suggestions. Ok so i have replaced the fuel pump to no avail, made sure the push rod was fitted, still not getting any fuel to the fuel pump. Am i right in thinking that if i put my finger over the fuel hose from the fuel pump i should feel suction? Because i dont :( I have checked the fuel hose and it appears fine but will double check. Any more suggestions would be great :) Regards, Yan_83

Suck on the hose from the fuel tank, if your mouth fills with petrol the hose isn't blocked. Also if you lower the hose below the level of the tank, petrol should just pour out. Sounds like the hose may be blocked. Cheers Matt

Matt75 Suck on the hose from the fuel tank, if your mouth fills with petrol the hose isn't blocked. Thant's not so silly, i would suck on the hose to at least prime the hose then put back on the pump. that would tell you of blockage or not. One thing to make sure of is the hoses on the pump are on the right outlets, if they are wrong you get your symtoms. Simple mistake but easily made. Good luck

Any idea of the above question regarding fuel line order on the fuel pump?
Thanks :)

The fuel pump nozzle pointing up goes to the carby and the other one goes to the fuel line to your tank. Did you confirm you don't have a blockage? Also make sure you haven't tried to connect the breather hose to the pump too. Have seen this done too, but not by me! Post up some pics. Matt

Ok I have checked the fuel lines for blockages and also suck fuel through to prime the lines. The fuel lines are the correct way on the sender and assuming they are the correct way on the fuel pump! The big thing is that I am unsure if the push rod is functioning properly, if I remove the pump and get someone to crank the engine I initially see the push rod move once in and out and then looks like its stopped moving!
Will try and post photos of the fuel pump, but would like to know how to check the push rod properly :)
Thanks again :)

The pushrod is not physically attached to the eccentric on the aux shaft. If already in, it would move out & stop. It's a while since i've pulled a fuel pump off, but I think the pump plunger is spring loaded, & thus keeps the pushrod on the eccentric Gregg

Don't assume anything as you'll make an ass out of you and me! Make sure they are on right to begin with as this is an easy fix. If you have no blockage in the lines then either the fuel pump is knackered or there is an issue with the auxillery shaft maybe. Did you try removing the fuel hose fro the carbie end and cranking the engine? Could be your carbie is not set up properly too. Cheers Matt

That's wrong how you have it connected. Also the pump should be mounted so that carby spout points up towards the carby. Cheers
