Wires to starter?

Hi All.
Sorry to post yet another Q.
Trying to wire up ignition and while the manual tells me what wire to use (which i kinda
remember even from 14 years ago) it doesn't tell the me the orientation.
SO.
There are three spade terminals that go on the back of the starter motor solenoid.
One is at the top and one is underneath and there is also one off the side.
What goes where???
One of the wires (red/green stripe on mine) is shared with the ignition.
The other is reb/blue stripe on mine.
Can any one tell me which termnals to hook em up to? please?

Thanks.
Daz.

My starter only has 2 small wires, but here is my understanding.
2 large terminals on the solenoid usually 12 or 13mm nut, lets call them 1 and 2. The first one goes inside starter motor, one of the 3 terminals is connected to this, use a buzzer meter to establish which of the 3 it is,that terminal goes to ign coil +(to reduce voltage drop at coil when cranking engine over).
Large Terminal 2. This connects directly to battery +. one of the other 2 small terminals may connect to this as an accessary B+, again use the buzzer to find if this is the case and note which connector it is.
The solenoid needs to be "excited" to activate and this terminal does not buz the meter on either of the 2 large terminals, this connection goes to the start position on key switch.
Now you have identified 2 of the 3 wires and where they go. The third, which may be B+ accessary, I would check where it goes to before connecting to the large 2nd terminal. remember this large terminal is B+, no fuse no second chance, be sure where the third wire goes before you connect it.

    Ouch - my brain hurts.
    Thanks Hendo.
The large terminal is no problem - this quite obviouslt is battery and runs the motor.
The the two spade terminals are the issue. As i said one wire is constant ignition the other is the start wire.
I did in desperation hook it up and i can get the solenoid to click but the starter wont rotate and i have yet to figure out why. It was rebuilt and then never operated.
On the solenoid cover the is "C" next to one spade and "SW" next to the other.
I have no idea what these mean and there is nothing in the manual that relates.
I'll have to pull the motor off and find out why it's not spinning.

One my MK II I have a relay that has direct wire to the battery.  Then 2 wires go direct to the starter on the top and bottom and the one off to the side is the ground I believe.

I can email you pics and a copy of the wiring diagram if you need it.

    Cheers

    Hi matt.
I think i may have soerted it.
The one off the the side is linked to the bottom one. I am presuming that this is for cranking.
The top plug i am assuming is the igniotion wire.
If you are to confirm that it would great - thanks

The one that is linked to the bottom terminal that powers the motor itself is supposed to go to the coil.  Std the car runs a ballast resistor, this gives better spark when cranking, mainly to help cold starting.

Ok - so that nearly cost me my car.
the top terminal is ignition the bottom is switch.
Reversing them starts a fire on your resistance wire.
Sooooo lucky i was standing at the engine bay and didn't walk away.

You are Very lucky to get a 2nd chance razzle, I have seen lots of different solenoid types and different terminal layout on the same type, thats why I said to use a meter first. Have you got it sorted now?

    Thanks Hendo.
Yeh i think so - given that event i just switched them back.
I still have an issue witht the battery at the moment so i still can't turn the motor over.
I have a bigger issue with the clutch cable now - i just posted about it.
2 weeks we move house wich will interupt things for a bit now. :-(
