From another forum.....
To decode your Classic vehicle, read the following and hopefully all of the information that you require is here.
You can always contact FORD direct. Supply them with your VIN/CHASSIS number and they will confirm how your car left the factory. Phone:
13-FORD or email
customers@fordcrc.com.au The VIN on the engine / car will be 12 characters long, for example, JG63UM78543K or AL1JYM10231K. These are decoded as follows;
First character = Product source.
A = USA, C = UK, J = Australia, U = Japan and S = Japan as well.
Second character = Assembly plant.
G = Broadmeadows - (Passenger), L = Broadmeadows – (Truck), H = Brisbane and K = Sydney
3rd & 4th characters = Body Series
See below
5th & 6th characters = year and month of production respectively:
To decode the month and year of the car, go here:
http://www.fordforums.com.au/vbporta...article&id=316 Serial Number The five numbers shown are called a Serial Number. Each number is unique to each car which is used to specifically identify it. There is no decoding as such except for contacting Ford and supplying your VIN. Ford can then fully decode the number and therefore, provide full details such as all options listed (at time of manufacture, not at the Dealer), Manufacture date, Wholesale date as well as Sale date.
The last code at the end of the VIN will be a letter which indicates the number of cylinders. This information (along with other info) is then used by the Government (Traffic Department) to calculate registration duty payable.
These codes will be;
R = 4 cylinder
C = 6 cylinder
K = 8 cylinder
2 EXAMPLES OF VIN CODE BELOW: A = USA source
L = Assembled at Broadmeadows Truck plant
1J = F100 4x2
Y = 1981
M = March
10231 = Serial Number
K = 8 cylinder vehicle for road tax purposes (Does not designate 302 or 351)
&
J = Australia
G = Broadmeadows
63 = Fairlane marquis
U = 1978
M = July
78543 = Serial Number
K = 8 cylinder vehicle for road tax purposes (Does not designate 302 or 351)
<snip> For some other good reference sites, these are also well worth your visit:
http://www.falcongtclub.org/PaintCodesXAXB.asp http://www.aus-ford-uk.co.uk/html/co...e_colours.html Typically, most A and C sourced cars came in the form of parts manufactured overseas and then fully assembled here in Australia e.g. F Series, Escorts & Cortina’s. These were known as CKD kit form cars - CKD = Complete Knock Down.
The complete list of Body Series codes are shown below. <sequential numeric list deleted>
To make it easier, I have split them into their own groups.
